Sedentary behaviors, such as watching TV or playing video games, can lead to a lack of physical activity and possible weight gain. If you are worried about your children's physical fitness level or whether they are gaining more weight than their pediatrician recommends for normal growth, you will want to set a positive example and encourage more activity. An active lifestyle can help improve their overall health and promote a healthier lifestyle.

Step 1

Plan family activities that encourage activity. Go for a family walk after dinner, or take a trip to the zoo or aquarium. Amusement parks and museums also require you to do a lot of walking.

Step 2

Set a positive example. Share your workout plan with your entire family so that your children know that you are active. Include them in your workouts if they are old enough to participate in the same exercises as you.

Step 3

Explain the importance of being active to your children. Physical activity helps to manage weight and reduces the risk for illness, injury and chronic disease, and it will help them feel better about themselves.

Step 4

Pick more active chores for your child. Have your child vacuum, mow the grass, rake leaves or walk the dog instead of folding laundry or washing dishes.

Step 5

Limit sedentary activities. Limit the amount of time your children can play games or watch TV each night to one or two hours. Tell your child about these rules, and stand firm by them.

Step 6

Allow your child to walk to and from school if the route is safe. Talk with other parents in your neighborhood, and start a walking group to and from school. Take turns volunteering to chaperone the children on the walks.

Step 7

Get your child involved in recreation sports. Sports such as soccer and basketball require multiple practices per week, and there are usually competitive games. The added activity will help your child burn calories and stay active.
