Lacrosse is a fast-paced field sport played throughout the United States and Canada. An early version of the game played an important role in native American culture; today's game is an adaptation of the warlike game observed by European settlers in North America in the 1600s. The stick, or crosse, is the key tool used by the players to move the ball during play.

Men's Lacrosse Sticks

According to the 2011-2012 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Rules, acceptable lacrosse stick lengths fall into two categories: the short crosse, which is 40 to 42 inches long, and the long crosse, which ranges from 52 to 72 inches in length. These lengths include both the shaft and head of the stick. Attackers use the short stick, while goalies are allowed a stick ranging anywhere from 40 to 72 inches. Midfielders may use either a short or long stick, or alternate between the two.

Stick Composition

Lacrosse traditionally was played with sticks made from a solid hardwood, like hickory. In response to growing interest in the sport, lacrosse equipment makers have developed lighter-weight, composite material sticks, as well as sticks made from expensive durable materials such as titanium and graphite. According to Dick's Sporting Goods, most men today use an aluminum stick with a pocket of nylon laces woven around leather strips.

Lacrosse Midfielders

Lacrosse midfielders select their sticks for maximum flexibility, since players in this position play both offensive and defensive aspects of the game. For offensive, or attacking, play, midfielders typically use a shorter crosse with a thick handle. Successful defensive play requires midfielders to use a longer stick. No more than five players on a team may use long sticks on the field at the same time.

Women's Stick Lengths

Women's lacrosse mirrors more closely the original native American game in many aspects, including equipment. Women's sticks range from 36 to 44 inches and usually have a wooden or aluminum handle. As in men's lacrosse, attackers use sticks in the short end of the spectrum and defenders use longer sticks. Again, midfielders may use either length.
