Reflexology is the practice of stimulating nerve endings in the hands and feet to create effects in other parts of the body. When you're in labor, reflexology techniques may be able to help you with your contractions, so that your labor is faster, safer and less painful. Women who have allergies to medications or prefer drug-free births will especially find these techniques comforting.

Thumb Point

Miami ob-gyn Lena Leino recommends the spot in the center of the thumb may be very helpful in inducing labor. It's considered effective because of stimulation of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland releases oxytocin, a hormone that is responsible for uterine contractions. Use the thumb and index finger of one hand to press the center of the thumb on the other hand for at least three minutes. Then, repeat on the other hand. This is a simple reflexology move to use on yourself, but your partner can do it for you, too.

Arch by the Heel

This point is considered a big help to woman who are beginning to experience serious pain from their contractions as labor progresses. It relaxes you deeply, too, which helps you focus on the strength of your contractions. You'll need your partner, a friend or your reflexologist on hand for this point. Start with one foot. The point is located through the center of the foot's arch, just in front of the heel. You might find it tender at first, so tell the other person to use less pressure if it's painful, but after some of your tension releases, you can take a lot more than when stimulation first begins. Repeat on the foot, starting slowly again, so the pressure isn't painful.

Second and Third Toes

If your contractions slow after a healthy start, your partner or another person in the room can help try to get you progressing again by working on the second and third toes. The American Pregnancy Association suggests someone press and release on both toes at the same time. Pressure should be firm and repeated. After a few minutes, you may feel a warm sensation up your legs and into your pelvis that can help speed up your contractions again.

Center of the Arch

This spot is recommended for your breathing, which can really help you with contractions. Your partner or reflexologist presses with his thumbs at the center of the arch until you feel comfortable pressure. He then moves each thumb just a little bit down and outward and applies pressure again on both feet at once. You may feel the stimulation in your diaphragm immediately or it may take a combination of pressure and circular stroking.
