Exercises that involve agility usually come in the form of activities that involve running and a lot of leg and foot work, such as sprinting, aerobics classes and dancing. Typically, exercises that require agility are used while preparing to play sports that also require agility, including soccer, cheerleading and basketball, but they can be performed to improve your agility overall.
Aerobics
Performing the exercises associated with an aerobics class such as stretching, step ladder movements and moving laterally in rhythm with music requires a high level of agility. Aerobics classes are offered in an assortment of types, each geared to the skills and abilities of different types of people. If you're a beginner who is not very agile and have yet to master the basics of aerobic class exercising, there's a class for you. If you're an advanced participant who can handle the complicated movements of aerobics training, there's a class for you. Many fitness centers and exercise facilities offer aerobics classes geared to a wide range of skill and agility levels.
Dance
Similar to aerobics classes, dance classes require a high level of agility and are designed to provide the benefits of aerobic exercise in a musical setting. While aerobics class activities require basic forward, backward and lateral repetitive movements, dance classes are more expressive and involve a lot of jumping, twisting and twirling. Like aerobics classes, dance classes are catered to different levels and abilities, but do require participants to be somewhat agile. Dance classes take place in a musical setting that includes a variety of musical types, including Latin and hip hop.
Jumping Rope
Jumping rope is a form of exercise that's used by an assortment of athletes, including boxers, football players and basketball players, in efforts to increase foot speed and agility. This form of exercise can be found in parks and on playgrounds, engaging children and helping to develop and improve agility. From one-person jumping to multiparticipant double Dutch routines, jumping rope requires a high level of agility and stamina, and can have far-reaching benefits, including toned muscles and improved coordination.
Stationary Exercises
Exercises that involve stationary exercise equipment such as an elliptical machine also require a certain amount of agility. These machines require coordinated body movements, similar to those performed by cross-country skiers, using alternating leg and arm strides. Some weight-room exercises, such as medicine and exercise ball training, also require agility to successfully complete. Using an exercise ball to stretch and strengthen back and abdominal muscles, for example, requires the ability to balance your body on a round object while performing a particular stretch or exercise.
