The pH of human skin is slightly acidic, from 4.5 to 5.5, according to "PH and Skin Care." A pH factor above 7 is considered alkaline and below 7, acidic. Cleansers, shampoos and facial washes are often highly alkaline --- a pH of 8 or more --- stripping away the skin's natural protective acid mantle. This wreaks havoc on your skin, causing acne, dryness and eczema. Lemons are acidic and help lower the skin's pH balance after using an alkaline cleanser. Mixing a lemon juice solution to treat your skin is a simple process.

Step 1

Squeeze four large lemons into a glass jar with a lid. After washing your face, dip a cotton ball into the lemon juice and apply all over your face. Leave the lemon juice on for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. The jar of lemon juice will keep in the fridge for one week.

Step 2

Combine 1/4-cup of warm water with 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice to make a lemon toner. Use a cotton ball to apply it all over your face. Do not wash the toner off and moisturize as usual.

Step 3

Moisturize skin with a lemon yogurt moisturizing lotion. Combine 1/4-cup of natural yogurt with 2 tbsp. honey and 2 tbsp. lemon juice. Use your fingers to massage the lotion over your skin. Allow the lotion to soak into your skin for 10 minutes before wiping off with a soft, dry cloth.

Step 4

Combine 2 tbsp. lemon juice with 4 tbsp. of a nourishing oil like almond, olive or avocado for a nourishing, moisturizing toner. Massage the oil over your skin after washing your face. Do not rinse off.

Tips and Warnings

  • Squeeze a half lemon into a pitcher of water and use this as a lemon hair rinse to lower the pH of the scalp after shampooing. Do not rinse out.
