Pregnancy causes great changes to the body, not all of them good. As your body makes concessions for the new life within, it creates other issues as a result that aren't as accommodating for you such as heartburn, aches, and dry skin to name a few. If dry skin has become an itchy uncomfortable problem, easing it in a manner that is effective for you and safe for the baby is imperative.
Causes
Dry skin on the abdomen is the result of the stomach expanding and the skin being stretched over it. If dry skin is appearing in other areas of the body, hormones are to blame. In addition to hormones and stretched skin, external factors such as cold dry weather and low humidity may also play a part in drying out the skin.
Simple Changes
Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Limit your showers to an as-needed basis as hot water and excess bathing can strip oils from the skin causing dryness. Avoid bathing more than once a day. Mild soaps, thorough rinsing, and patting the skin dry are all important to help care for dry skin. Use a dehumidifier to keep the air in your home from becoming too dry.
Moisturize
Moisturizing is an essential part of rehabilitating dry skin, but use caution as many lotions and creams contain alcohols and chemicals that may make things worse. Alcohols are often used in scented lotions so avoid anything that boasts to be fragrant. Petroleum jelly is a safe and natural alternative. Apply it to your skin after you have bathed and patted the skin dry to help lock moisture in.
Considerations
Scratching itchy dry skin may lead to infection. Apply a cold compress or a bag of frozen vegetables to an area that is itching severely to numb it and provide some relief. Read the labels on over-the-counter products as they may contain unsafe chemicals that become absorbed into the skin.
