With so many female-specific products on the market, there's no reason for a woman to have to ride a snowboard designed for men. Women's snowboard boots will not fit snugly into the bindings of a male-specific model. However, female riders can perform a few basic alterations to ensure their boots remain secured atop the men's snowboard.
Women's Boots
In the early days of the sport, women riders did not have access to female-specific snowboarding gear. The majority of snowboarding boot manufacturers now offer custom models that can fit the unique shape of the female leg. According to Shred-O-Pedia, women's snowboard boots are generally more narrow than men's to accommodate the slender foot of the typical female rider. When attempting to ride a men's snowboard with women's boots, your feet will wobble dangerously during turns and maneuvers.
Men's vs. Women's Bindings
While a female-specific binding may appear quite similar to men's models, they have a few defining characteristics that set them apart. Compared with women's snowboard bindings, men's models feature a widened foot bed. Another key difference between the men's and women's snowboard binding is the height of the vertical highback plate. Women's bindings feature a lowered highback plate to accommodate the natural placement of the female calf muscle. These key differences cause the men's binding to be incompatible with a women's snowboard boot.
Men's Snowboard
The dimensions of the men's snowboard make it quite difficult to ride while wearing a pair of female boots. According to the outdoor experts at REI, men's snowboards generally have a wider waist than models designed for female riders. The extended waist will make it more difficult for a female rider to effectively transfer her body weight between the edges of the board. Women may also have difficulty maneuvering a men's snowboard because it features an elongated deck.
Modifications
As men's and women's snowboards feature identical mounting holes, you can easily install a set of women's bindings on a men's board. This is the only scenario where you'll be able to safely ride a men's snowboard while wearing female-specific boots. To remove the bindings from the men's snowboard, simply loosen the mounting screws located on the circular base plates. Use a No. 3 Phillips screwdriver because it's compatible with numerous types of bindings. Align the women's bindings over the corresponding mounting holes and tighten the screws.
