Some of the least expensive and most effective remedies for clear skin involve the foods you eat. Although the cosmetics industry sells billions of dollars worth of skin care products yearly to people coping with acne, dry skin and wrinkles, one of the simplest cures is good nutrition, with some foods being especially beneficial to the skin. The same foods that promote healthy skin are good for overall health as well.

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, both of which help neutralize free radicals that can damage DNA. Damaged DNA can cause cell damage and create aging of skin cells. In addition to their function as antioxidants, blueberries also contain soluble and insoluble fiber and are a rich source of vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin and manganese.

Green Tea and Water

Another antioxidant-rich beverage is green tea. Antioxidants counter inflammation and protect cell membranes from damage. Green tea has been used to reduce damage from overexposure to ultraviolet light and sunburn, thereby reducing skin cancer risk. Although not a food, pure fresh water hydrates cells and flushes toxins out while letting nutrients in. Proper hydration causes sweating, which cleanses the skin. This is especially important for acne. If you don't drink enough water, you can't rid yourself of dead skin cells, which can contribute to blocked pores and more acne.

Salmon

Salmon is a good source of essential fatty acids such as omega-3s. These fatty acids are also found in other fatty fish, such as herring and tuna, along with flaxseed and walnuts. Omega-3s cut down on the production of inflammatory agents that can cause skin damage. Additionally, salmon is a good source of protein, vitamin B12, potassium and selenium.

Nuts and Seeds

Along with fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds are great for your skin as well. Brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds are especially good for acne because they contain selenium and zinc. One of the causes of acne is deficiencies in these minerals. MayoClinic.com considers nuts to be skin-friendly due to their antioxidant content. Most foods that assist with clear skin are also good sources of antioxidants.
