Medifast is a weight-loss company that offers clinically proven, doctor-recommended weight-loss products and services. Medifast, founded in 1980, offers weight-loss programs designed to fit the lifestyles of men, women, diabetics and others who have special dietary needs. Medifast plans are offered in several forms and come with an assortment of food items, including shakes, bars, oatmeal and soups, designed to help provide fast weight loss.

Plans

Medifast offers a basic plan and several custom plans designed to meet different dietary needs. Each plan includes Medifast Meals, which have a low glycemic-index rating and are low in fat. Medifast Meals are designed for use by people with Type 2 diabetes and can also be customized to meet the gluten-free requirements of individuals who are allergic to gluten. In addition to men, women and diabetics, Medifast weight-loss plans are available for people who may have special dietary needs, including seniors, nursing mothers and bariatric-surgery patients.

Support

Medifast recognizes the importance of providing support to its clients during their weight-loss journey and as of August 2011 offers four types of support: online, health coaches, weight-control centers and personal physicians. The company's online support is offered through its website in the form of an online support community, which includes fellow clients and an informational resource center. Medifast health coaches are also offered as part of the weight-loss plans and can help guide you through the plan you have chosen. Medifast Weight Control Centers are located in 10 states, including Texas, California, Florida and Virginia, and are another support option offered with Medifast weight-loss plans. One-on-one counseling is offered at these centers. You can also use Medifast plans in conjunction with the services provided by your personal physician, whom the company contacts to provide you with the support you need to succeed.

Daily Routine

Medifast's "5 and 1 Plan" involves eating once every three hours, six times a day, and is designed to shift your body into a steady fat-burning mode that will help you lose weight safely and quickly. This plan, and the others offered by the company, is designed to provide the essential nutrition required while losing weight without the need of weight-loss medications, such as phentermine. Medifast Meal packages provide five Medifast Meals per day, while the sixth meal, known as the Lean and Green Meal, is self-prepared and should contain measured portions of non-starchy vegetables and lean protein.
