All herbs and supplements have the capacity to cause side effects. You should be aware of potential side effects before taking a particular supplement. 5-hydroxytryptophan, more commonly known as 5-HTP is a substance needed for serotonin production. Although 5-HTP may cause drowsiness in some individuals, it is not known to make you tired. However, there are other side effects to be aware of. Consult your doctor before taking 5-HTP.

Function

Neurotransmitters are important brain chemicals that facilitate communication between neurons across your brain. Serotonin is one of these chemicals. It is most well-known for its role in mood modulation. Increased levels are associated with feelings of well-being, while decreased levels are associated with depression. Serotonin also influences your appetite, sleep cycles and motivation. 5-HTP plays a crucial role in your mental health as a precursor to serotonin.

Uses

5-HTP supplements are available without a prescription. They are derived from Griffonia simplicifolia seeds -- an African plant. 5-HTP has varied use. It is most well-known for its use for mild to moderate depression. It is also used to curb appetite since increased serotonin levels are associated with reduced appetite, particularly carbohydrate cravings. 5-HTP is used for insomnia, migraine headaches and fibromyalgia also.

Dosage and Side Effects

5-HTP is primarily available in tablet and capsule form. The typical dose is 50 mg three times daily, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Doses higher than those recommended increase your risk for serotonin syndrome, a potentially dangerous condition resulting from excess serotonin. 5-HTP side effects include gas, heartburn, nausea, appetite loss and feelings of fullness.

Precautions

The safety of taking 5-HTP while pregnant or nursing is unknown. Do not take 5-HTP if you are prescribed anti-depressant medications. Use caution if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or liver problems. 5-HTP may interact with medications used to control migraines as well as fibromyalgia medications such as tramadol. Take 5-HTP only after discussing it with your health-care provider.
