Although colon cleansing is a centuries-old practice, it has gained attention in recent years, as of 2011, due to the popularity of detoxifying diets. Manufacturers peddle products with claims of enhancing health and ridding the colon and intestines of toxins. By clearing old waste, colon cleanse aids might cause weight loss, although the health risks likely outweigh any benefits.

About

Since colon cleansing appeals to so many dieters, many products are available over-the-counter, online and in health and vitamin shops. Many of the products contain potent diuretics and potentially harmful chemicals. Herbal formulas can have medicine-like effects, interacting with medications and posing health risks. Additionally, users often experience uncomfortable side effects, such as cramping, bloating, nausea and vomiting. In an article for CNN Health, author and family medicine physician Dr. Ranit Mishori says, "Colon cleansing aids in the form of laxatives, teas, powders and capsules ... tout benefits that don't exist."

Facts

Doctors sometimes recommend colon cleanse aids for patients who are undergoing medical procedures. Most doctors don't condone their use for weight loss or detoxification purposes, according to Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Michael F. Picco. Since your digestive system and bowel are able to effectively eliminate waste and bacteria, such products are not necessary. Additionally, colon cleansing can be harmful because it puts you at risk for dehydration, infection and bowel perforation. Colon cleansing is especially dangerous for people with kidney or heart problems, due to its effect on electrolyte levels.

Choosing a Product

If you choose to experiment with a colon cleanse aid for weight loss, choose a product made by a reputable manufacturer. Research the ingredients and don't believe fantastic claims that a product is able to promote rapid weight loss or cure or treat a condition. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice and be sure to tell him about any medications you are using to avoid drug interactions.

Alternatives

If using a colon cleanse aid does not seem worth the risks, use other practices to achieve weight loss and encourage healthy bowl patterns. A high-fiber diet helps to normalize bowel movements, lower blood cholesterol levels and stabilize blood sugar levels. Maintaining a high-fiber diet increases satiety and promotes weight loss, as well. MayoClinic.com says women age 50 and younger can acquire these benefits by consuming around 25 g of fiber daily. Men of the same age need approximately 38 g of fiber daily. Women age 51 and older need slightly less fiber: 21 g daily. Men of the same age need 30 g daily.
