5 Things You Need to Know About Parenting Stress

1. Chase Parenting Stress Away

Parenting can be one of most stressful roles in an adult's life. Luckily, it's also one of the most rewarding. The only consistent rule of parenting is to expect the unexpected. Tommy will miss the school bus; Maggie will color all over her big sister's homework; Jimmy will flush toy soldiers down the toilet. Since the unexpected is inevitable, it helps when parents can let go of unrealistic expectations. Still, stress piles on, so it's important for parents to find stress relief. If you feel pressured and irritable most days, then you're suffering from parenting stress that needs immediate attention.

2. Just Breathe

When stress or anxiety strikes, breathing increases in speed while the amount of air actually decreases. Taking rapid shallow breaths means your body doesn't get enough oxygen, resulting in muscle strain and headaches. If you notice the effects of stress on the body, take a few minutes for some deep breathing. Inhale through the nose and notice air filling your abdomen and lungs. Make the inhalation last. Release your breath through your nose or mouth. After a few breaths, you should notice your breathing slowing and tension leaving your shoulders and back.

3. Best Case Scenario--Plan for the Worst

Expect the best, but plan for days when you run 15 minutes behind or 30 minutes behind because you can't find anything. Avoid some of the chaos by organizing. If you know that mornings are crazy in your house, start the night before choosing clothes, making lunches and packing backpacks. Stock up on the same color and style of mittens or gloves because one of a pair always seems to walk away. Keep your gas tank at least a quarter full at all times and something in your cabinets if you can't get to the grocery store. Everyone will survive a dinner of macaroni and cheese.

4. Easy Does It, Relax

It's easier to say you'll relax than actually do it, but not nearly as rewarding. Make time everyday to perform your relaxation method of choice. Just 15 minutes makes a world of difference in getting through the remainder of the day. Progressive relaxation techniques emphasize relaxing your feet, and then gradually moving your way up your body. Other people find that visualization works wonders. Go to the beach in your imagination. Feel the breeze from the surf dancing over your body. Needless to say, doing relaxation exercises while children run through the house is impossible. Park your kids in front of Sesame Street while Mom has her quiet time. Invest in ear plugs, if needed.

5. Replenish Your Parenting Drive

You work hard, and you deserve time to take care of yourself. That means getting to eat, shower and sleep all in one day! Limit caffeine so that sleep comes easier at night, and don't stay up doing the laundry. It will get done eventually. In addition to taking care of yourself, allow yourself rewards. Maybe it's a long bubble bath, enjoying a good book or a long walk. It's OK to hire a babysitter for "me time" or "couple time." Remember, you deserve it. Taking care of yourself allows you to be a better parent.
