Eyebright, also known as Euphrasia officinalis, is a traditional remedy used in Western herbal medicine for conjunctivitis, eye strain, respiratory infection, gastritis and sinus congestion. In addition to its medicinal benefits, eyebright also contains a range of vitamins and minerals that make it even healthier when taken as a tea, decoction or tincture. Nutrient levels may vary depending on the geographical location in which eyebright is grown and harvested.
Vitamins
Eyebright provides a selection of vitamins and antioxidants when digested or taken as an herbal extract. According to Drug Information Online, eyebright contains both vitamin C and beta-carotene -- a precursor to vitamin A. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an important vitamin required for the healthy functioning of the immune system and may also inhibit cancer growth, support collagen and tissue healing, reduce inflammation and suppress histamine reactions. Beta-carotene, also known as pro-vitamin A, supports immune function, fights free radicals, keeps mood balance and supports eyesight.
Minerals
According to Gillian Painter, author of "Materia Medica for the Southern Hemisphere," eyebright contains a range of minerals that may benefit human health and nutrition. Eyebright provides good amounts of iron and silicon and trace amounts of the minerals iodine, copper and zinc. These minerals all play a role in maintaining connective tissues in the body, such as hair, skin and nails, and iodine and zinc help support immune health. Plant-based iron is not well absorbed by the body, however, though the presence of vitamin C in eyebright may support better absorption of this mineral.
Flavonoids
Flavonoids, also known as vitamin P, are a group of plant chemicals that have antioxidant properties and work together to protect against oxidation and free radical damage. Flavonoids that are found within eyebright include rutin, apigenin and quercetin. All of these flavonoids help support healthy circulation, reduce inflammation and support immune function. Quercetin in particular may help reduce allergies and fight cancer.
Safety and Toxicity
Eyebright is considered safe and well tolerated by the majority of the population. According to Kerry Bones, author of "The Essential Guide to Herbal Safety," eyebright is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, has no known drug interactions or side effects and is safe for children. Herbal medicine is not intended to be a replacement for medical care, and you should always check with your doctor and registered medical herbalist before purchasing eyebright products.
