Hailey-Hailey disease is a rare hereditary skin disease first described by the Hailey brothers in 1939. The disease causes a painful rash and skin blisters. As of 2011 there was no cure, and treatment is focused on managing symptoms and preventing complications. Calcium is neither a cause nor a cure for Hailey-Hailey disease, but there is a connection.

Hailey-Hailey Disease

Hailey-Hailey disease can appear at any age, although it is most likely to first occur in the 20s or 30s. The first sign is usually a painful erosive skin rash in skin folds such as the armpits, groin, under the breasts or between the buttocks. Lesions appear and disappear at random, and leave no scars. If the lesions remains for a long period, they may become thickened and the skin can develop painful cracks.

Symptoms and Complications

Hailey-Hailey disease is often worse in the summer, as heat, sweating and friction exacerbate the disease. Complications such as bacterial infections can develop, with an unpleasant smell. In addition, white bands may develop in the fingernails and the palms of the hands can become pitted. Hailey-Hailey disease is usually diagnosed based on family history and its appearance, but it may be mistaken for other skin problems such as impetigo.

Calcium and Hailey-Hailey Disease

The Hailey-Hailey Disease website notes that the disease is caused by a mutation in a gene on the third chromosome. This gene makes a calcium pump that is found between the cells of the skin in Hailey-Hailey disease. Cells use calcium to produce signals that tell the cell what to do and when to do it. The calcium signaling process controls the mechanism that makes normal skin cells stick together, but in Hailey-Hailey disease, the cells do not hold together and the skin forms blisters.

Calcium and Symptom Management

There is no connection between calcium intake and Hailey-Hailey disease. Taking calcium supplements will not help the disease and rubbing calcium cream on the affected skin does not improve the skin condition. Since there is no cure, symptom management is important. People who suffer from Hailey-Hailey disease are usually advised to avoid sweating and getting sunburned. Cortisone creams and antibiotics in oral or cream form can be useful.

Considerations

Hailey-Hailey disease is an incurable condition, but according to DermNet New Zealand, most patients regard it as a nuisance, rather than a serious problem. If you have questions of concerns about Hailey-Hailey disease consult a health-care professional.
