1. Shake Out the Stones
The most common need to cleanse the kidneys is the presence or re-occurrence of kidney stones. There are a variety of kidney cleansing fasts, each designed to flush toxins from the kidneys and dissolve stones which may be present. It is important to discuss options with a naturopath or health care professional, as some methods may have negative effects on existing health conditions and can increase the absorption of medication.
2. Fasting Rests the Vital Organs
Both water and juice fasting can be used to cleanse the kidneys and other vital organs. Giving the body a break from solid foods allows the organs to work solely on cleansing and healing. Begin reducing your food intake for a few days before your fast to prepare your stomach and then enjoy one to three days of fresh, clean water or filtered organic fruit and vegetable juice. Drink as much water, juice or herbal teas as needed to combat hunger. Ease out of the fast slowly, eating raw fruits and vegetables for a few days before returning to your regular diet.
3. The Water Cure for Healthy Kidneys
The water cure can be used as a water fast or added to a juice fast. Begin and end the fasting process as normal, but when you begin, calculate the necessary intake of water from your body weight. Cut your body weight in pounds in half, and the resulting number is the amount of water you should drink each day in ounces. For examply, if you weight 180 pounds, you should drink 90 ounces of water daily. Add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to every 10 ounces of water. You can drink other fluids during the water cure; however, avoid all caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
4. Add Potassium
Drinking only fluids helps to heal your kidneys but can also cause electrolyte loss or potassium deficiency. To help flush toxins and restore potassium and electrolytes, prepare a healing broth. In a large pot, combine 1 part scrubbed potato peels, 1 part equal mixture of scrubbed carrot peels and whole chopped beets, 1 part equal mixture of chopped onion and garlic cloves and 1 part equal mixture of celery and dark green leafy vegetables. Cover the ingredients with clean, pure water and simmer on low for 1 1/2 hours. Once ready, drink the broth 2 or 3 times daily throughout your fast, discarding the vegetables.
5. Finishing Your Fast With a Watermelon Cleanse
A watermelon cleanse can be used on it's own to treat kidney stones or to complete your kidney cleanse. Purchase 2 large, organic watermelons and cut them into pieces. Fill your bath tub with warm water and soak, eating the watermelon as you sit in the tub. As the necessity arises, urinate directly into the water, quickly dissolving kidney stones and flushing toxins.
