Regular potatoes and sweet potatoes are vegetables often served as side dishes. Each may be baked, roasted or boiled. Regular baked potatoes and sweet potatoes have some differences in the vitamin and mineral content, but they have about the same number of calories per serving, as long as nothing else is added to them.

Baked Potato Calories

Baking potatoes vary in size and may be topped with butter, sour cream and salsa that changes the nutritional profile; however, 100 g of baked potato with no toppings has 94 calories. Most of those calories are due to carbohydrates. There are approximately 84 calories coming from the 21 g carbohydrates, with about 8 calories coming from the 2.1 g protein. There's less than 1 g fat and 1.5 g sugar.

Sweet Potato Calories

Sweet potatoes are often topped with sweet sauces, butter or oil, and may vary in size; however 100 g baked sweet potato with no toppings contains 90 calories. Most of the calories come from carbohydrates. There are 20.7 g carbohydrates that provide about 83 calories, and there are 8 calories from the 2 g protein. It also contains 6.48 g sugar and less than 1 g fat.

Baked Potato Nutrition

Baked potatoes with the the skins are a good source of potassium, magnesium and niacin. They also contain some iron, zinc, selenium, manganese, folate, vitamin C, and vitamin K and fiber. Baked potatoes are low in sodium and contain no cholesterol. The USDA counts one medium baked potato as one cup of a starchy vegetable.

Sweet Potato Nutrition

Sweet potatoes are a good source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, beta-carotene and vitamin A. They also contain choline, betaine, niacin, panthothenic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin C, magnanse, zinc, and iron, and are still low in sodium. Sweet potatoes also contain fiber. The USDA counts one large sweet potato as one cup of an orange vegetable.
