Muscle cramps or spasms are among the many potential side effects you might incur on a low-carb diet. Although the jolting pains might leave you wondering whether something serious is happening, a muscle cramp or spasm is a common problem and one that often has a simple fix. If cramping or spasms become more frequent, it might be time to see your doctor, however.

Causes

Since low-carb dieting has a diuretic effect on the body, dieters are more likely to experience dehydration, particularly when the weather is hot and when exercise causes fluid loss through sweating. Additionally, mineral depletion is a potential factor for muscle cramps and spasms, which often occurs when you adhere to a strict low-carb plan and eliminate certain nutrient-dense foods from your diet. Too little potassium, calcium or magnesium can contribute to leg cramps.

Diet Changes

Certain dietary interventions can help reduce leg cramping and spasms. Start by drinking more fluids to prevent dehydration. Consume at least eight full glasses of water daily. Explore low-carb foods that offer essential nutrients and still allow you to stay within your daily carbohydrate limits. Nuts are rich in magnesium. Chicken, turkey and fish are high in potassium. Monterrey Jack, cheddar and Gruyere cheeses contain few carbohydrates per serving and are a good source of calcium. Nutritional supplements might also help fill in nutritional gaps. Consult your doctor for product suggestions.

Home Remedies

A few simple tricks can stop a muscle cramp or spasm in its tracks. At the first sign of a spam, begin stretching and rubbing the affected muscle. Apply a warm compress to relax the muscle. If the pain persists, use an ice pack or nonsteroidal ant-inflammatory drug -- commonly called an NSAID -- such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with a history of stomach ulcers or those using blood-thinning medications should consult a trusted health care provider about the safety of these medicines, however.

Warning

Although muscle cramps and spasms while you are on a low-carb diet are generally not serious, in some cases they signal an underlying medical condition. Muscle spams can result from kidney failure, hypothyroidism, pregnancy or metabolic problems. Additionally, some medications can promote muscle spasms. If you continue to experience cramps or spasms after you make the above changes, consult your doctor for advice.
