Nutrisystem & Digestive Problems

Nutrisystem is a diet delivery program that claims to help you lose weight without needing to cook gourmet meals. You might enjoy the wide range of prepared foods on the program, but you could develop indigestion when you start Nutrisystem. Some careful planning and advice from your doctor or a nutritionist helps to prevent these symptoms.

Symptoms of digestive problems include unusual fullness when you have not eaten much, nausea, bloating or stomach pain, according to Mayo Clinic. You might experience indigestion when you eat fatty or spicy foods, drink alcohol or caffeine, smoke or have too much stress. Losing weight with Nutrisystem might prevent some digestive problems because obesity is another risk factor. Some of the foods on Nutrisystem cause digestive problems in some individuals, and a Nutrisystem advisor can work with you to substitute other foods.

Fructose Intolerance

Each day on the diet, you eat a Nutrisystem breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack or dessert, as well as additional foods that you purchase for yourself at a grocery store, such as whole grains, healthy fats, lean proteins, vegetables, fruits and dairy products. If you have fructose intolerance, your body is unable to absorb fructose, and you might experience digestive problems such as diarrhea, cramping or gas when you eat foods with fructose, such as fruits, according to Mayo Clinic.

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance is most common if you have Crohn's disease or if you are an Asian, black or Hispanic-American adult, according to Mayo Clinic. If you have the condition, you experience symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps and bloating when you eat too much lactose, which is the natural sugar in milk. If you are unable to consume the recommended milk, cheese and yogurt on the list of grocery foods in your Nutrisystem plan, eat soy-based substitutes instead and avoid Nutrisystem meals and snacks with dairy ingredients.

Dietary Fiber

You are likely to experience gas, bloating and cramping from increasing your fiber intake when you start Nutrisystem. Nutrisystem meals and snacks provide 16 g dietary fiber per day, and the fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans from your grocery additions are additional sources of fiber. Dietary fiber lowers your cholesterol and helps you control your weight and blood sugar, but it might lead to digestive problems when you increase your intake too fast, according to Mayo Clinic. Be sure to drink plenty of water when you are on Nutrisystem to reduce your symptoms.
