Andropause is the medical term used to describe part of the aging process for men. Although the time of the onset of andropause can vary widely from person to person, medical professionals commonly recognize andropause as male menopause. Traditionally, doctors considered andropause part of your midlife crisis, preventing any serious consideration of its causes or effects. Recently, however, medical professionals have started to recognize andropause as a legitimate medical condition. Doctors commonly recommend vitamins to treat this condition. You should, however, speak with your doctor prior to taking any vitamin supplement.
Defining Andropause
Andropause afflicts aging men just as menopause sets in with aging women, and andropause also typically decreases hormone levels. During andropause your testosterone levels lower, and you will typically experience a decrease in libido. Additional symptoms of andropause include fatigue, night sweats and depression. The onset of andropause typically occurs sometime during middle age, although this varies widely, and progresses as you continue to age.
Why Vitamins
Though medical professionals commonly recommend vitamin supplements to help treat the symptoms associated with andropause, vitamins alone will neither prevent nor halt the symptoms entirely. However, according to the book, "The Andropause Mystery: Unraveling Truths About the Male Menopause," by Dr. Robert Tan, vitamins can help you manage the unpleasantness of some of the symptoms associated with this condition. Additionally, the book states that many of the symptoms can actually become exacerbated by vitamin deficiencies. This is the primary reason that your doctor recommends vitamin supplements, to help prevent vitamin deficiencies. However, no scientific evidence supports the use of vitamins to treat andropause.
Which Vitamins
According to Dr. Tan, the main vitamins recommended to treat andropause are vitamins C and D. The reasoning behind the use of these vitamins is that they both support a healthy immune system and the healthy functioning of your body's processes. Vitamin D additionally can help prevent osteoporosis when combined with calcium. Osteoporosis is a medical condition that results in significant bone loss, another side effect of andropause. Additionally, doctors commonly recommend other types of nutrients to treat andropause including zinc, niacin, L-arginine and creatine.
The Disclaimer
While the vitamins C and D can promote healthy bodily functions, debate continues over whether andropause is a true medical condition or a normal part of the aging process for men. Clinical evidence does not support the use of vitamins or other supplements to treat andropause. You should always speak to your doctor prior to taking any health supplement.
