Zoloft, whose generic name is sertraline, belongs to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The doctor may prescribe sertraline to treat major depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. During sertraline therapy, your doctor may advise you to take fiber.

Dietary Fiber

Constipation or infrequent bowel movements is a common side effect of sertraline, according to Drugs.com. Fiber can help prevent constipation caused by sertraline. Fiber adds bulk to stool, which makes its excretion easier. Natural sources of fiber include raw fruits, vegetables, whole grains, oat bran, wheat bran, seeds, lentils, peas and beans.

Fiber Supplements

Your doctor may prescribe fiber supplements if you are unable to eat foods rich in dietary fiber. Fiber supplements are available in form of chewable tablets, capsules, powders and wafers. Do not take fiber supplements at the same time with sertraline because fiber may decrease how quickly medications are absorbed. Take fiber supplements at least one hour after taking any medications, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Increase fluid intake while taking fiber supplements. Examples of fiber supplements include psyllium and methylcellulose.

Prevention

You can also prevent constipation through lifestyle changes such as getting more exercise and drinking more fluids. Regular exercise can help stimulate intestinal activity. Exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday or three times a week. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day to help soften your stool. Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement, as this can cause constipation.

Other Effects

When taking sertraline, you may experience common side effects such as headache, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, increased sweating, insomnia, dry mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, weight gain, memory loss, loss of coordination and sexual problems, according to Drugs.com. Adverse effects of sertraline include breathing problems, chest pain, swelling of the face and tongue, throat tightness, hives, hallucinations and seizures. Seek medical assistance right away if you experience these adverse affects.
