When you're nauseous, drinking regularly or keeping fluid down can be difficult. However, the risk of dehydration is severe, especially with water loss due to vomiting. Signs of dehydration include fatigue, weakness, muscles cramps, headache, dry mouth, thirst, lightheadedness and low urine output. If you avoid drinking fluid that upsets your stomach and don't drink a large amount of fluid quickly, you will make it easier to stay hydrated when you're nauseous.

Step 1

Sip slowly on fluids in order to keep yourself from vomiting. When thirsty and tired, it is easy to suck down an entire glass of water or juice, but it will likely come right back up.

Step 2

Choose clear fluids, such as water, unsweetened juice, or low-carbonated, caffeine-free sodas such as ginger ale, Sprite or 7-Up. Clear soup broth that is low in sodium can also be used.

Step 3

Avoid overly hot or cold fluids. Soup broth should be warm; water, juice and sodas should be cool.

Step 4

Consume foods with high fluid content, such as Jell-O, popsicles or fruit.

Tips and Warnings

  • Resting frequently, changing position and breathing deeply can help nausea pass more easily.
  • See a doctor if your vomiting persists for more than 24 hours, or if you experience pain, severe headache, blood in vomit, or symptoms of dehydration, or you are unable to hold fluids down for 12 hours.
