Constipation is a health disorder characterized by bowel movements that occur less frequently than every three days. The condition affects more than 4 million Americans each year, according to the National Institutes of Health. The cause of constipation is usually dietary and might relate to inadequate fiber and fluid intake, which also might cause low potassium.

The Basics

Potassium is a mineral in the body that regulates fluid balance, which affects blood pressure snf influences hydration in the intestines. If the dietary level of potassium is lower than normal, dehydration might cause the waste in the intestines to become hard, dry and difficult to pass through the colon, causing constipation.

Sodium and Potassium

The sodium and potassium in the body are linked because they work together to regulate fluid balance. The standard American diet is excessively salty, which results in an unhealthily high blood sodium level. A potassium deficiency can result. Reducing intake of salt often improves the function of potassium in the body, which might prevent potassium-related constipation.

Potassium Sources

Potassium food sources are varied because most fruits, vegetables, meats and grains contain at least a small percentage of potassium. Foods and beverages with the highest amount of potassium include raisins, grapefruit juice, plantains, halibut, spinach, prunes, baked beans, pinto beans, lentils and sweet potatoes.

Considerations

Taking diuretics might cause potassium deficiency and constipation. Monitor additional symptoms that might accompany potassium deficiency, including muscle spasms, weakness, irregular heartbeat and fatigue. Do not self-diagnose. If you suspect you might have constipation-related to potassium deficiency, ask a doctor to administer a diagnostic test to accurately determine the cause.
