If you are trying to gain weight, you have more than likely established weight goals, researched what foods you need to eat and the type of exercises you must perform. While most people have the ability to become athletic and gain muscle mass, continuing your weight-gaining program can become difficult if you lose motivation. As a man, you must ensure your body receives ample amounts of protein and other nutrients to gain healthy weight and not just fat. Reaching your goals is possible if you maintain high motivation throughout your entire fitness journey and doing so is possible when following a strategy.
Step 1
Establish short-term, attainable goals. Goals should be specific, realistic and timely to prevent setting yourself for failure or disappointment. For example, if you wish to gain 10 lbs. of muscle mass, establish an exact plan as to how this will happen. Determine what and when you're going to eat, when you will exercise and what exercises you'll perform as well as the target date to gain 10 lbs. Setting up a realistic goal will set you up for success.
Step 2
Create a reward system when you reach a goal. A reward system may help sustain your motivation throughout your weight-gaining journey. Establish rewards that you find enjoyable; however, make sure the rewards will not derail your progress. For example, do not make a reward of not going to the gym for a week; instead, reward yourself with a weekend getaway or dinner at that restaurant you've been wanting to go visit.
Step 3
Read magazines or books geared toward muscle development and exercise for men. These sources provide tips and information geared toward the male reader and can provide motivation to continue with your goal.
Step 4
Partner with a friend or loved one to act as a source of accountability. Transforming your body may be easier if you're doing it with a friend, because both of you can express frustrations and fears as well as celebrate milestones achieved.
Tips and Warnings
- Work with a personal trainer or some other fitness professional to help establish realistic weight-gaining goals.
- Do not give up if you miss a goal. Stopping your plan is the only way to ensure you will never reach your goal.
