Ginkgo is an herb with leaves that are typically used to manufacture extracts for medicinal purposes, according to MedlinePlus. Sometimes the seeds of the ginkgo plant are used medicinally, but this is not common practice and the use of ginkgo seeds is not well studied. Do not take any herbal supplements or drugs without physician approval as negative side effects or interactions could occur.

Uses

Ginkgo is traditionally used to treat ailments such as Alzheimer's disease and memory disorders. In the elderly, ginkgo is sometimes used to improve blood flow to the brain to improve memory loss, headache, difficulty concentrating, ringing in the ears, headache and vertigo. In certain circumstances, ginkgo is used to improve circulation, such as blood flow, in the body. Do not use ginkgo unless your doctor approves and you discuss the recommended dosage.

Circulation

Ginkgo is rated as possibly effective for improving circulation, or blood flow, according to MedlinePlus. Ginkgo increases blood circulation, especially to the legs, which helps increase the distance that some people couldn't otherwise walk due to pain. Since ginkgo increases blood flow, you can experience forceful blood flow, which can lead to heart palpitations.

Heart Palpitations

Heart palpitations are very hard and fast heartbeats. FamilyDoctor.org explains that it's quite fine and normal to feel your heart pounding when you're exercising or doing other physical activity, but this is not OK when you are sitting and relaxing. An irregular heartbeat can cause a heart palpitation or they can occur due to medications, supplements and other types of stimulants, such as caffeine. If you begin to experience heart palpitations your doctor will ask you about drug use, the use of supplements and about your diet and activity level. It may be necessary to wear a heart monitor for up to two weeks so that your doctor can determine the exact cause to determine a proper diagnosis.

Prevention/Solution

To help prevent heart palpitations, avoid using any type of stimulant such as caffeine, illegal street drugs, tobacco and alcohol. If you begin to experience heart palpitations after taking ginkgo, or any other drug, tell your doctor right away. You may need to discontinue taking it or lower your dosage. Do not discontinue any medications or supplements without physician approval.
