Hyperglycemia is the medical term used to describe elevated blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels. Hyperglycemia, notes the Medical News Today website, happens when there is insufficient insulin in your blood or when the insulin in your blood is not working as it should. Hyperglycemia is a common occurrence among diabetics. Certain herbs and natural foods may be helpful in reducing your blood sugar. However, it is always wise to clear the use of these natural treatments with your doctor first.
About Hyperglycemia
Possible causes of hyperglycemia, notes the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, include traumatic injury, surgery, stress, various infections or illnesses, increased food consumption and using an insufficient amount of insulin, if you are diabetic. Hyperglycemia may cause the following symptoms: increased appetite, thirst and urination, vision changes, and fatigue. Some people with this health problem may experience no symptoms at all, however. If left unchecked, high blood sugar levels can cause organ damage, including damage to your eyes and kidneys.
Helpful Herbs
Herbal remedies have long been used to reduce blood sugar levels. According to expert herbalist Ed Smith, author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," bean pod, blueberry leaf, dandelion root, devil's club and jambul seed are among the most effective herbs for regulating blood sugar levels. Other helpful herbs may include fenugreek, bitter melon, juniper berries and ginseng. More clinical research evidence may be needed to validate the purported health effects of these herbal remedies, however.
Natural Foods and Dietary Practices
Certain natural foods and dietary practices may be helpful in lowering your blood sugar levels. In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch states that a high-fiber, low-fat diet that incorporates raw fruits and vegetables and fresh vegetable juices may decrease your need for insulin, reduce blood sugar surges, and lower the amount of fat in your blood. Beneficial natural foods include root vegetables, legumes, whole grains, cheese and nut butter.
Additional Information
High blood sugar levels can be dangerous both immediately and over time. If you develop the characteristic signs and symptoms of high blood sugar, do not delay seeking treatment for your condition. Your primary care provider can assess your condition, offer an accurate diagnosis, and provide you with relevant and effective treatment recommendations. Not all herbs or natural foods may be appropriate for you. Discuss the risks, benefits, limitations and potential drug interactions of these natural substances with your doctor first.
