Not many people associate "fast food" with healthy. Most fast food items are loaded with saturated fat and sodium, and are often rough on the waistline. But the fast food industry has been making some changes, and many chains now offer healthier options on their menus. When you are on the run and fast food is the only option, you are not limited to a greasy burger and fries anymore. There are now several less fattening fast food options.

The Deli Sandwich

One option is to go with a deli sandwich instead of a burger. Subway offers eight different sandwiches that are well under 400 calories and have less than 6 g of fat. The Harvest Chicken or the Honey Bourbon Chicken subs from Quiznos also have less than 400 calories and 11 g of fat if you order a small size. The Oven Roasted Turkey, Honey Cured Ham, or the Roast Beef subs would also be good choices if you order them without the sauces that more than double the fat content.

Salads

A salad is a common choice when trying to eat healthier. Not all salads are low in fat, though, so beware of heavy dressings and high calorie toppings when choosing a salad. McDonald's Premium Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken, Wendy's Apple Pecan Chicken Salad, Burger King's Tendergrill Garden Salad with Light Italian dressing, and the Chick-fil-A Chargrilled and Fruit Salad are among the least fattening fast food salads.

Other Options

A grilled chicken sandwich is another menu item that is usually low in fat. Just be sure to order it without cheese or bacon, and ask them to go light on the sauce. A creative way to find a healthier meal is to put together a few side items from the menu. For example, Wendy's chili and a baked potato make an excellent low-fat meal that is also high in fiber and potassium.

Sides and Sauces

Many fast food meals get a large portion of their fat and calories from the sauces and side items served with them. You can always ask for no sauce or you can substitute a less fattening condiment. Instead of French fries, pair your sandwich with a side salad, soup or chili, baked potato, or fruit cup.
