Can You Take Magnesium & Prescription Vitamin D Together?

Vitamin D and magnesium are two necessary nutrients for a healthy functioning body. Deficiencies in either can lead to serious side effects. You can take them as supplements to ensure adequate daily amounts. Sometimes vitamin D is prescribed in high doses when a doctor detects a serious deficiency. Knowing whether to continue to take magnesium, which can affect the body's use of vitamin D, is advisable while you are taking prescription vitamin D.

Prescription Vitamin D

Vitamin D is necessary to build strong bones and teeth. In children, insufficient amounts of vitamin D can lead to rickets or weak bones and teeth. In adults, a deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, or a loss of calcium from the bones causing them to weaken. Generally, vitamin D is prescribed to treat severe deficiencies as a result of underexposure to the sun or certain medical conditions, according to MayoClinic.com. Additionally, vitamin D can be prescribed to treat hypocalcemia or low blood calcium. Some prescriptions for vitamin D can come in high doses such as 50,000 IU per capsule.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral critical for proper bone formation. Additionally, magnesium is necessary for energy production, building DNA, cell signaling, and the regulation of calcium and other nutrients the body. You can get magnesium by eating whole grains, nuts and leafy greens. You can also obtain it in supplemental form and from many antacids. True deficiencies are rare, but low levels are common if your daily diet is low in foods containing magnesium.

Magnesium and Vitamin D Together

According to the Vitamin D Council, magnesium can influence how the body uses vitamin D. Magnesium is necessary to activate the enzymes that metabolize vitamin D in the body. Having low magnesium levels can actually reduce the amount of available vitamin D present in the blood. Magnesium and vitamin D may also work together in a synergistic way. An October 1996 study published in "Magnesium Research" demonstrated that magnesium and vitamin D appear to work together in a way that positively affects the immune system. Although the two nutrients appear to benefit one another in the body, MayoClinic.com advises not taking any antacids or magnesium-containing medicines while taking prescription vitamin D, especially in high doses, because their potentially interactive nature could cause unwanted effects.

Precaution When Taking High Doses of Vitamin D

When taken as directed, prescription vitamin D usually does not cause side effects. However, if you take it in large amounts for a long period, serious side effects can occur. If you experience bone pain, diarrhea, dry mouth, headaches, irregular heartbeat or any other side effects, contact your health care provider immediately.
