Caffeine acts as a diuretic, which stimulates your bladder. Too much bladder stimulation can lead to bladder spasms, irritation and possibly infection. You may just think of caffeine as a substance in your drinks, but some of the foods you eat also contain caffeine, such as chocolate. If you're concerned that you are developing chronic bladder problems, speak to your health-care provider.

Inflammation

Caffeine can inflame your urinary tract, bladder and kidneys. Inflammation occurs because caffeine is a bladder irritant. It irritates your bladder because it acts a diuretic and increases the frequency and urgency to urinate. This can overstimulate your bladder, which can lead to inflammation. You can experience discomfort when urinating due to the inflammation and increased risk of infection.

Infection

Bladder inflammation can leave your urinary tract irritated, which can make it easier for bacteria to invade your urinary tract. This can leave you more prone to developing infections and even leave you susceptible to recurrent infections. Infections can cause even greater side effects than just irritation. An untreated urinary tract and bladder infection can lead to kidney infections, which could result in permanent scarring.

Spasms

Overstimulation of your bladder can cause your bladder to have spasms. Bladder spasms can cause abdominal pain, cramping and a feeling of pressure. It may also cause you to leak urine. Muscle spasms can also make you feel as if you're going to wet your pants and make you run to the bathroom, but you find that you're unable to go once you get there. You may have to carry an extra pair of underwear with you in case of an accident or just because of leakage to help prevent odor or the moisture penetrating your jeans or pants.

Other Irritants

Caffeine is not the only substance that can irritate your bladder. Alcohol, spicy foods and acidic foods and drinks can also irritate your bladder. Bubble baths, soaps, detergents and clothing can also cause irritation. Soaps, detergents and bubble baths can inflame your urethra, or the outside opening of the urinary tract. Wear cotton undergarments, as they lock and pull moisture away from your body.
