Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, occurs when you can see objects close up, but you do not have good distance vision. In many cases, nearsightedness results from the natural shape of the eye, and the way this affects the light entering your eye. Vitamins and supplements such as chicory root cannot affect the shape of the eye, and chicory root does not have any known connection to improving or treating other eye conditions that may cause nearsightedness.
Chicory Root
Chicory, a plant also known as wild succory, has a reputation as a weed in certain areas. However, many people eat the root as well as the above-ground plant itself. Components of the chicory root may have properties that aid gastrointestinal function and improve appetite. The root may also help prevent or treat heart disease and other health conditions. You can eat the root fresh or purchase supplements such as pills that contain the root. Chicory does not have a known connection in helping eye problems such as nearsightedness.
Conditions
In addition to the shape of the eye, health and eye conditions may contribute to myopic vision. Diabetics experience changes in blood sugar, and these fluctuations may cause periods of nearsightedness. As well, cataract formation, a condition that results when the lens inside the eye begins to break down and turn cloudy, often results in poor distance vision and better near vision. Chicory root pills do not have any known benefit in treating or preventing these conditions involving myopia.
Treatment
Vitamins and supplements do not reverse or improve nearsightedness. You will need to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses to correct vision problems caused by the natural shape of your eye. Myopia that results from blood sugar fluctuations may require you to consult your doctor to help you formulate a diet and medication plan to keep these levels in good control. If you have cataracts that cause vision problems, you may need an eye surgeon to remove the cloudy lens in a procedure called cataract surgery, which will typically improve your vision.
Considerations
Changes in your vision require an evaluation from your eye doctor to determine the cause. The doctor will examine your eyes to uncover the cause for your problems and recommend any necessary treatment. Unless directed by your doctor, you should not use chicory root pills or other supplements, since these products will not typically improve your vision, and could result in serious side effects.
