Flaxseed oil is processed from the tiny hard seeds of the flax plant and has multiple benefits, including anti-tumor activity, notes the American Cancer Society. The Cancer Care Foundation says that cottage cheese may help protect against certain cancers, although the research results are preliminary and somewhat contradictory. If you have cancer, do not use flaxseed oil or cottage cheese without first talking to your health care provider.

The Budwig Diet

The Budwig Diet is a specialized anti-cancer diet using flaxseed oil and cottage cheese. It was invented by German scientist Johanna Budwig in 1951. Budwig found that cancer patients have low levels of omega-3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients such as phosphatides and lipoproteins. According to the Budwig Center, Budwig then developed a diet that was high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are thought to protect against certain types of cancer. To make the Budwig diet, use 1 cup of fat cottage cheese and 2 to 3 tbsp. of flaxseed oil. Add as much water to make it soft.

Research

Substances called lignans in flaxseed oil may produce anticancer benefits, according to a 2010 study published in the journal "Comprehensive Reviews in Food and Science and Food Safety." However, the exact mechanisms of action by which lignans exert anticancer effects are not completely understood. Researchers involved in this study suspect that the potent antioxidant effects of flaxseed oil lignans prevent oxidative reactions in cells and tissues, thereby reducing cancer risk.

Cottage Cheese and Prostate Cancer

In general, scientific evidence and research as of 2011 do not support the use of cottage cheese for the prevention or treatment of prostate cancer. However, according to the Cancer Care Foundation, a team of scientists at Duke University Medical Center found that cottage cheese may possibly prevent prostate cancer. This finding was published in the July 2001 issue of the journal "Urology." Researchers involved in this study concluded that cottage cheese can cause prostate tumors to shrink or slow their growth by lowering levels of testosterone, which predisposes people to prostate cancer.

Estrogen-Dependent Cancer

According to an article published in "Comprehensive Reviews in Food and Science and Food Safety" in May 2010, flax seed oil could protect against estrogen-dependent breast cancer. Flaxseed oil contains molecules that act against estrogen produced by your body. Since estrogen stimulates a breast tumor to grow, it is reasonable to theorize that flaxseed oil would help prevent breast cancer from starting and developing.
