Dr. Ian Smith is a medical contributor on "The View" and VH1's Celebrity Fit Club. He's the author of several books, including "the Fat Smash Diet," which contains his nine-day vegetarian detox. The detox diet is the first phase in a four-phase diet plan that promotes healthy eating and regular exercise for weight loss. Smith uses the detox diet to jump-start weight loss and rid your body of toxins.

Fat Smash

The Fat Smash diet is designed to last 90 days and is broken down into four distinct phases. It starts with a nine-day detoxification phase, then a three-week Foundation phase, a four-week Construction phase and then the Temple phase --- your new lifelong eating and exercise pattern. Smith explains that each phase builds on the previous one --- like a pyramid --- and that creating a solid foundation will "allow you to reach the top of your goals."

Detoxification --Meal Plan

During Phase 1 --- the detox diet --- you may not have any meat, cheese, bread, nuts, fried food, fast food, dessert, soda, alcohol or caffeine. Instead, you may eat unlimited amounts of vegetables --- except white potatoes and avocados --- fruits, tofu, legumes and air-popped popcorn. Each day you may eat up to 2 cups of brown rice, 4 egg whites, 2 cups of nonfat milk or no-sugar-added soy milk, 6 ozs. of nonfat yogurt, 1 cup of unsweetened hot cereal such as oatmeal, farina or grits and 1 cup of fresh-squeezed fruit juice.

More Detox

In addition to this vegetarian meal plan, you must also exercise for at least 30 minutes, a minimum of five days per week --- preferably cardiovascular activities. Smith also recommends a walk after dinner to increase metabolism. Sodium is limited, so you should rinse all canned foods and eat no more than two pickles daily. Drink plenty of water but no more than 2 cups of herbal or decaffeinated green tea. Try to eat small meals every three hours, which will help you stabilize blood sugar levels and avoid hunger.

Reaching Your Goals

Although you may stay on the detox phase of the Fat Smash diet more than nine days, eventually you will move to the next phases. Each phase introduces a greater variety and quantity of food and exercise. The maintenance phase, Temple, includes all foods and up to three glasses of wine or beer weekly as well as one hour of moderate-to-intense exercise five days per week. If you start to regain weight, Smith suggests going back to Phase 1 for a week to get back on track.
