Symptoms of Deficiency
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency are divided into three categories, early, moderate and severe states of deficiency. Early symptoms of deficiency include: anorexia, apathy, confusion, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, muscle twitches, poor memory and difficulty learning. Moderate symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, and severe deficiency symptoms include delirium, numbness, muscle contractions and a tingling sensation.
Causes of Deficiency
Magnesium deficiency can be a result of poor diet, alcoholism, severe burns, low levels of calcium in the blood and difficulty absorbing nutrients during the digestive process. The recommended daily requirements for magnesium, as noted on Medline Plus, are 310 to 320 mg for adult women and 400 to 420 milligrams mg for adult men.
