Low thyroid, or hypothyroidism, occurs when your thyroid gland no longer produces or secretes enough hormone to sustain normal bodily functions. Hypothyroidism slows your metabolism and may result in weight gain. It can also impact your mood increasing the risk of depression, fatigue and muscle aches. Untreated hypothyroidism causes serious complications with your reproductive system, heart or nerves. Hypothyroidism is incurable and synthetic hormone medication is necessary to improve thyroid function. Complementary treatments with dietary or aromatherapy oils may stimulate the thyroid but clinical evidence is scant in supporting these methods. Consult your physician before attempting alternative treatments.

Step 1

Eat oily fish twice a week. A 2010 study published in the "Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry" found that eating oily fish may improve metabolic factors related to low thyroid. Grill or bake the fish to retain the nutrients and reduce added saturated fats from frying in oil.

Step 2

Take fish oil supplements as an alternative to eating fish. If you do not prefer the taste of fish you can try supplements available over-the-counter. Consult your physician first before using fish oil supplements to ensure safety for your health and to determine dosing recommendations.

Step 3

Cook with small amounts of coconut oil instead of vegetable oil. Coconut oil is promoted as a metabolic booster for low thyroid but evidence is scarce to confirm claims. If you choose to use it, do so after consulting your physician and use it sparingly because coconut oil is high in saturated fat.

Step 4

Use drops of essential rosemary oil in a room diffuser to stimulate energy and combat fatigue or sluggishness associated with low thyroid. Essential oils of lemon, citrus, peppermint or eucalyptus also promote energy, boost your mood and reduce fatigue. Add three to five drops of the chosen oil to your diffuser, one to three times a day.

Step 5

Buy ginger, cinnamon, orange or grapefruit scented aromatherapy body oils and add three to five drops to your bath once a day. These scents help battle low mood, tiredness and stress associated with low thyroid.
