Apple cider and honey may provide acid reflux relief for some people, but not enough research has been done to back up claims for its effectiveness. As with many home remedies, apple cider and honey may or may not work for you. An acid reflux diet, which includes low-fat foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, usually helps with long-term protection. Antacids provide instant heartburn relief. If you suffer from frequent acid reflux, check with your doctor for dietary and medical advice.

Acid Reflux Causes

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. This causes the painful and burning sensation of heartburn in your upper chest and throat. You also may have a sour or bitter taste in the back of your mouth. Certain foods and beverages may trigger acid reflux by relaxing an esophageal muscle. The ring-like muscle normally contracts after contents enter the stomach. A relaxed muscle does not close properly and allows stomach acid to rise up into the esophagus, according to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology. Heavy meals also can increase the risk of acid reflux by slowing down digestion, causing the stomach to secrete more acid.

Triggers and Tolerated Foods

Fatty or fried foods, tomato-based products, citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine and carbonated beverages may relax the esophageal muscle and result in acid reflux. You may have specific triggers. Apples and apple juice are often recommended in acid reflux diets, which also may allow honey. Many people with frequent acid reflux occurrences can tolerate honey and apple cider, a natural form of apple juice that is not pasteurized. If apple cider and honey do not get rid of acid reflux, they may make a pleasant combination that does not cause it.

Honey Benefits

Proponents of using honey for acid reflux say the thick liquid coats the esophagus to prevent damage from stomach acid and avoid the burning sensation or irritation, according to HealthDiaries.com. A small teaspoon of honey may provide temporary relief from heartburn. The honey treatment can work in conjunction with an acid reflux diet to reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Another remedy includes adding 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar in an 8-oz. glass of water and adding honey. Some people may use apple cider vinegar in water alone. Apple cider vinegar may have the ability to balance acidity levels in the stomach to prevent acid reflux. Although many sites tout the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar, no authoritative sources back the idea. The acidic contents of apple cider vinegar may worsen symptoms, according to nutritionist Jennifer Rackley in an article for HealthCentral. Plain apple cider and honey may provide a better alternative. Apple cider has a stronger flavor than apple juice, but less acidic content than apple cider vinegar.
