When you have diarrhea, it is important to drink fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated. However, you should avoid certain beverages, like apple juice, because these can make your diarrhea worse. There are better, milder choices to help keep you hydrated without upsetting your stomach. Discuss what you should be drinking with your doctor if you have concerns, and seek medical attention if you develop symptoms of dehydration.
Better Beverage Choices
It is best to avoid drinking apple juice while you have diarrhea. Instead, opt for liquids such as clear and decaffeinated sodas, clear broths or sports drinks without caffeine. You could also suck on ice chips or take small sips of water throughout the day, if you find that anything else does not appeal to you or upsets your stomach. If you have a child with diarrhea, do not give her apple juice either. Instead, give her an oral rehydration solution, and discuss these with your doctor if you are unsure how to administer them.
Other Drinks to Avoid
Apple juice is not the only beverage you should avoid when you have diarrhea. Do not drink caffeine, alcohol or any drink made with milk, since these can worsen diarrhea as well. Milk contains many essential nutrients, but it can also lengthen the amount of time your diarrhea persists. Sugary drinks can also make diarrhea worse, especially in children; avoid giving your child soda or sweetened fruit juices. If you find that sugary beverages are worsening your diarrhea as well, discontinue drinking them until you recover.
Signs of Dehydration
You may become dehydrated while you have diarrhea. Symptoms of mild dehydration include a dry mouth, exhaustion, thirst, headaches and dizziness. Severe dehydration is considered a medical emergency and results in such symptoms as extreme thirst, little to no urination, sunken eyes, shriveled skin, low blood pressure, fever and delirium. If you suspect that you have become dehydrated or feel you may be at risk, seek immediate medical attention.
Reintroducing Apple Juice
Once you have allowed your digestive system to rest and recover for a few days, you can gradually begin reintroducing beverages like apple juice. However, if your diarrhea returns, stop drinking the apple juice and wait another day or two before attempting to consume it again.
