How to Make a Football Helmet Cake Without Fondant

Fondant, a thick frosting made from water, sugar and glucose, a is a difficult medium to work with when making a cake. Fondant is an appropriate covering for football helmet cakes, but cake forms, helmets included, can be frosted with other toppings that aren't quite as demanding to work with. Buttercream or whipped icing will work well, especially for a homemade cake. It can be extremely difficult when using an icing other than fondant, so all detail work will need to be completed by hand. Be patient, and do not expect perfection on the first cake attempt.

Step 1

Bake a sheet cake according to recipe instructions. Allow the cake to cool completely.

Step 2

Print out or cut out from a sports publication a large football helmet photo. Cut out the helmet form and lay it on top of the cooled cake.

Step 3

Push three or four straight pins through the outline and into the cake to hold it in place. Trim the cake around the outline with a sharp knife.

Step 4

Spread buttercream or whipped icing over the entire cake, including the sides, with a large spatula. Keep an even coat of icing on the cake so it will present well.

Step 5

Pour a contrasting color of icing into a piping bag. Squeeze the piping bag gently while adding details to the helmet. Include details such as a a team logo and face guard.
