People travel for the holidays, for special events, for work and more. Traveling is fun and exciting for some people and anxiety-provoking for others. Someone who suffers from travel anxiety is seriously affected by the anxiety.

Function

Medication for travel anxiety can alleviate behavioral symptoms, such as intense worrying before and during travel, and physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches and difficulty breathing.

Short-Term

Those traveling only a couple of times a year would probably opt for medication, such as benzodiazepines, that can be taken the day of travel and will take affect that day.

Long-Term

For those who travel often and need regular anxiety medication, the best option would be an antidepressant, such as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. These medications can take up to eight weeks to become fully effective.

Therapy

Benzodiazepines can be habit-forming and addictive, and medication will not cure the anxiety symptoms. Combining drug treatment with therapy is the best option.

Warning

See your physician for anxiety medication. Do not take medication prescribed for a friend or family member, because everyone reacts differently to psychiatric medications.
