The itching and unpleasant feeling you get from bug bites is all too common, especially during warmer months. Several insects, such as mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs and spiders, leave small traces of venom when they bite, which causes swelling and itching. After the bites heal, dark scars may remain. Some forms of home treatment can speed up the healing process.

Step 1

Apply onion extract gel to your marks. Onion extract reduces inflammation and helps flatten raised areas where collagen has collected during scarring. The allicin in onion extract also helps speed the healing process of underlying, damaged tissue. Apply the gel two to three times per day for optimal benefit, suggests Columbia University.

Step 2

Apply an alpha hydroxy gel or lotion to your marks daily after a thorough cleansing with mild soap. Alpha hydroxy acids help exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells. Once you remove these skin cells, you find new, fresh skin underneath. As fresh skin forms, discoloration will fade, causing your bite marks to become less noticeable with regular treatment.

Step 3

Massage your marks with lemon juice. Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent that helps even your skin tone and contains vitamin C, which is essential to your skin's natural healing process. Apply with a cotton ball and gently rub in a circular motion. Repeat two to three times a day.

Step 4

Rub your marks with aloe vera gel. This is another natural remedy that helps reduce inflammation and promotes new skin cell growth. Aloe vera also helps correct discoloration of the skin because of the amino acids naturally found in the aloe plant.

Step 5

Speak to your dermatologist about skin resurfacing techniques to remove discoloration and uneven texture. According to the website Model Beauty Tips, procedures such as dermabrasion, laser resurfacing and light therapy remove the top layer of damaged skin, promoting new skin to form. Chemical peels can also help superficial scarring that does not respond to other treatment.
