Nasal congestion is one of the most common complaints that brings people to the doctor's office, especially during cold and flu season. There are many holistic alternatives to prescription and over-the-counter medications to treat nasal congestion.

Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion has many causes. During cold and flu season, a viral or bacterial infection can cause congestion by increasing blood flow to the nasal passages. Allergies commonly cause nasal congestion as well. This is due to a reaction to airborne particles which cause an increase in the secretion of clear, watery mucus. In some instances, nasal congestion is caused by structural abnormalities such as a polyp or enlarged adenoids. In any instance, nasal congestion can be very troublesome and many people seek holistic treatment in lieu of prescription medication.

Saline Lavage

One of the easiest, safest ways to help relieve nasal congestion is by washing the nasal passages with salt water. This works by rinsing irritants and allergens from the nasal mucosa and also helps decrease inflammation. Several options for saline lavage exist. Saline drops or sprays are easy to use and may provide relief. Other options include a device such as a neti pot which allows salt water to flow through the nasal cavity. Saline solutions can be bought over the counter or can be made by combining 1/8 tsp. of salt with 8 oz. of warm water. The saline solution can also be instilled into the nose with a bulb syringe.

Steam

Steam is a tried-and-true method of breaking up nasal congestion. To do this, boil a pot of water and then remove it from a heat source. You can cover your head with a towel and put your face near the steam (but not directly over boiling water) and inhale the steam. Another way is to use a vaporizer to loosen up nasal mucus. Essential oils such as eucalyptus can be added to boiling water or to a vaporizer in order to enhance its decongestant properties.

Other Remedies

Many other remedies for holistic approaches to nasal congestion exist. Drinking warm teas, especially those that include peppermint, can help loosen up mucus. Eating spicy foods or cutting and eating a raw onion also may aid in decreasing congestion. Eating citrus fruits may also help to break up congestion and provide relief.
