Regardless of the snowboarding discipline that you prefer, there are a few must-have items you'll need to stay safe on the mountain slopes. Snowboard companies offer gear that can adapt to myriad riding conditions. While some snowboarders stick to a specific riding style, others participate in each of the events the sport has to offer.

Snowboard

While snowboards might appear alike to the untrained eye, there are a few distinguishing characteristics that set them apart. The twin-tip snowboard is a must-have item if you participate in a riding discipline known as slope style. The twin-tip snowboard allows you to pivot between a regular and switch riding stance without catching an edge. You'll need a rigid snowboard if you prefer to ride in the powdered snow of a backcountry terrain. According to The-House, powder snowboards feature an elongated deck as well as a rounded nose and flattened tail.

Helmet

Even a low-speed snowboarding fall can result in head trauma. Regardless of your favorite riding terrain, a snowboarding helmet will keep your head protected during high-speed slide outs and falls. Slope style and backcountry riders generally wear a helmet that features a dome shape. The dome helmet has a series of safety straps that buckle under your chin. According to X Sports Protective, the full face helmet is a must-have item for downhill racers, as it provides increased protection of your jaws and cheeks.

Boots

Boots are a must-have items for all types of snowboarders. While slope style riders prefer boots that feature a soft flex, downhill snowboarders opt for a pair of rigid boots for increased board response. Choose a pair of breathable snowboarding boots, which will allow the outside air to absorb your perspiration. Some boots feature a traditional lacing system while others have a draw-string design. According to REI, high-end snowboarding boots are equipped with an adjustment dial that controls the laces.

Outerwear

Outerwear is a must-have for snowboarding because it helps to keep you protected from the elements. The snowboard jacket is an essential piece of outwear that allows you to maintain a normal core temperature in frigid conditions. For spring and summer rides, choose a shell snowboarding jacket that doesn't feature a layer of insulation. The best snowboarding pants are constructed of tightly woven fabrics such as nylon and polyester. Goggles are another must-have, as they increase visibility and shield your eyes from flying ice crystals.
