Take a break from jogging after you undergo rhinoplasty, or a nose job. This surgical procedure requires a healing period before you start exercising, to prevent bleeding, swelling or damage to the area. After your doctor gives you the "all clear" to start jogging again, begin at a gradual pace to re-introduce your body to exercise and reduce the risk of injury.
Step 1
Rest and do not jog or exercise for a minimum of three weeks after rhinoplasty to help your nose recover and to prevent damage to the area. Consult with your doctor about the activity you can perform during the recovery period. Get approval before starting a fitness program that includes jogging.
Step 2
Walk for up to 30 minutes a session during the first week of restarting your exercise routine. Walking gradually introduces exercise to your muscles and limits the amount of bouncing that might affect your nose's healing process. Stop walking if you feel pain or discomfort in the nose or face and continue to rest until the nose heals. Attempt a walking session for five of the seven days in the first week.
Step 3
Walk for five minutes to warm up your muscles before starting to jog. Find a flat area to walk and jog to limit strain on your muscles after recovery from surgery.
Step 4
Jog for up to 20 minutes at a pace slower than your before-surgery pace. Take walking breaks if you are not ready to start jogging for the entire duration of the workout. Stop jogging at the first sign of pain or discomfort in your nose. Strive to jog three or four times a week, and perform a low-impact exercise two of the additional days each week for a good fitness base.
Step 5
Increase your pace and distance each week, at a rate of 10 percent, until you reach your pre-surgery pace and distance. To prevent injury to your muscles, avoid over-exerting yourself.
Tips and Warnings
- Ask your doctor about jogging after rhinoplasty. Pay attention to your jogging form and try to limit the amount of bouncing your head and body experience.
