Improper treatment of a first-, second- or third-degree ankle sprain can lead to chronically unstable or weak ankles. While rest, ice, compression and elevation can relieve immediate symptoms, putting yourself under the care of a doctor is essential for proper healing and long-term sprain prevention. As part of a treatment and/or injury prevention plan, your doctor may prescribe an ankle brace consisting of a combination of straps and lacings. Understanding how to strap your ankle brace is essential to make sure it protects your ankle now and prevents injuries in the future.

Step 1

Open and first pull the outer straps and then the inner calf straps or lacings away from the ankle brace. While both usually use a Velcro-style closure, some calf straps may use a lace rather than a strap.

Step 2

Tilt your foot so it points upward at a 90-degree angle -- like a 15-minute increment on a clock.

Step 3

Slide the ankle brace onto your foot so your heel is snug against the back of the brace.

Step 4

Fasten or tighten the calf straps, starting with the straps at the top and working your way from the top to the bottom. Pull the straps tight enough to keep your ankle firmly in the brace, but not so tight that they impede blood flow to your ankle and foot.

Step 5

Pull each outer strap up and over to form a crisscross. Each strap should lay flat across your ankle and extend up onto the bottom of your calf. Again, pull the straps tight, but not so tight that they impede blood flow to your ankle and foot.

Step 6

Stand up and take a few steps to test the brace for tightness and comfort. Make any necessary adjustments.

Tips and Warnings

  • While these instructions work for most ankle braces, your doctor may prescribe a custom brace. Regardless, watch closely as your doctor (or physical therapist) demonstrates how to strap your ankle brace, and follow any special instructions they may provide.
