Lansium domesticum, or lansones, is a type of fruit-bearing tree that grows in places with average temperatures between 77 and 95 degrees, the Philippine Bureau of Agricultural Research says. Lansones requires 70 percent to 80 percent humidity as well as 120 to 150 rainy days in order to optimize its growth and development. The edible part of lansones is about 100 g. Lansones is also nutritious and has B vitamins like thiamine and riboflavin as well as vitamin C and other nutrients.
Riboflavin
Riboflavin helps your body convert food into energy. The recommended daily intake of riboflavin is between 1.1 mg and 1.3 mg, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes. Riboflavin deficiency causes fatigue and slowed growth, as well as digestive problems and light sensitivity. Your body uses riboflavin to produce red blood cells. Riboflavin also has antioxidant properties that help protect your body from free radical damage. Although generally considered safe, riboflavin has been associated with numbness, itching, orange urine and light sensitivity.
Thiamine
Lansones contains thiamine, or vitamin B1. Thiamine is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin that helps your body maintain a steady flow of electrolytes into and out of nerve and muscle cells, MayoClinic.com explains. Thiamine is considered generally safe. However, thiamine has been associated with skin irritation and drowsiness. Adults over the age of 19 need between 1.1 mg and 1.2 mg per day.
Vitamin C
Ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, is a water-soluble vitamin that your body uses to make collagen and repair tissue. Vitamin C protects your body from free radical damage. Vitamin C deficiency causes your gums to become inflamed, dry skin and nosebleeds. Low levels of vitamin C elevate your risk of developing hypertension, gallbladder disease, stroke and atherosclerosis. The recommended dose for vitamin C supplements is between 250 mg and 500 mg taken twice daily. The recommended dietary intake for vitamin C is 90 mg per day for males over the age of 18 and 75 mg per day for females over 18.
Considerations
Lansones contains nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and fiber, the Philippine Bureau of Agricultural Research notes. Lansones also has calcium and potassium. However, lansones trees require about 90 lbs. of organic fertilizer yearly. Lansones trees that grow in well-fertilized soil and receive adequate amounts of water will yield about 300 kg of fruit each year once they are between 12 and 15 years of age.
