How to Fix My Credit Report If it Is Showing a Former Married Name?

Fixing errors on your credit report can be a nightmare. Maintaining a credit report that is accurate and correct is essential to getting favorable rates on a loan. Additionally, ensuring that your personal information is correct on the report can save a major headache.

Step 1

Check your credit report for free at www.annualcreditreport.com. This website is provided by Federal law, and it allows you to check your credit report once a year for free.

Step 2

Look at your three reports and determine which accounts have a previous name attached to it. It is common for credit agencies to have differing information; your Experian credit report will have slightly different information than your TransUnion report.

Step 3

Write a letter to the credit agency asking them to remove the name from the account. Writing a letter is the best way to solve inaccuracies on your credit report. The letter should be typed and addressed to the dispute department of the credit agency. The letter should name the inaccuracy and provide the correction. Include any proof you may have to support the correction, such as a proof of divorce document. You should send copies of the proof and not the originals. Should the error appear on all of the three credit reports, you will have to write a letter to each one.

Step 4

Send the letter(s) by certified U.S. mail. This way, you'll know that the credit agency received the letter and will have proof of it.

Step 5

Contact the credit agency to discuss the issue if you do not get a response within two weeks.
