The speed at which you grow your hair can be increased by improving the blood circulation to the scalp and giving your body the vitamins and minerals it needs for hair production. Human hair grows an average 1/2 inch per month, according to HairBoutique.com. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements and following proper brushing techniques will help your hair grow at its maximum speed.
Increase Circulation
Step 1
Start your day with proper brushing. Do 50 strokes by flipping your head over and running the brush down from the nape of your neck, as recommended by Dr. George Michael. Dr. Michael is considered the "long hair guru" and is the founder of the George Michael Salons. Brushing increases circulation to the scalp.
Step 2
Hang your head off the side of your bed a few times a day. Being upside down brings blood to the head and promotes hair growth, says Dr. Nicole Sundene in an article called "How to Grow Your Hair Super Fast!" Dr. Sundene is the editor of Kitchen Table Medicine, an online health magazine. Yoga poses, such as downward dog, also increase blood flow to the scalp. Lie face down and bring your hands next to your armpits with your fingers pointing forward. Push yourself up until your arms are straight and try to press your heels into the floor. Your hips will be lifted high so that your body makes a triangle with the floor. Relax your neck and breathe deeply for a minimum of 30 seconds.
Step 3
Massage your scalp with mint and rosemary oil. These herbs will improve circulation, says Dr. Sundene.
Supplements
Step 1
Take a daily multivitamin. HairBoutique.com says that biotin, Inositol, B-6, and folic acid will maximize your hair's genetic growth cycle. Dr. Sundene suggests Tri-Boron Plus by Twinlab.
Step 2
Drink 1 tbsp. of flaxseed oil daily. Dr. Sundene says that flaxseed is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and protein, both of which are helpful for hair growth and strength.
Step 3
Add some pre-ground flax seeds to your soup, salads and smoothies, recommends Dr. Sundene, if you don't like drinking it. Try 1 to 3 tbsp. once or twice a day.
Tips and Warnings
- Wash your hair every other day so as not to strip your scalp of essential oils. Rinse your hair daily and condition, but save the shampoo for every other day, advises Dr. Sundene. She suggests an organic shampoo, free of sodium lauryl sulfate.
- Watch your selenium intake. Dr. Sundene warns that 1,000mcg or more of selenium daily can cause hair loss.
