Fentanyl Side Effects Patch

The fentanyl patch is a medication applied to the skin to manage chronic pain symptoms. Fentanyl is a narcotic analgesic (pain reliever) available as a 25 microgram per hour dose. It continually releases its medication into your body for up to 72 hours, according to Drugs.com. However, do not apply more patches than your doctor prescribes as this can lead to serious side effects.

Common Side Effects

Fentanyl can cause nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, diarrhea or constipation, states Drugs.com. In some instances, fentanyl can trigger stomach pains and indigestion. Fentanyl can also affect your mental state and cause nervousness and anxiety. In some instances, your moods may alter. Sweating, trouble sleeping and redness or irritation at the patch application site are other common side effects of fentanyl. Consult a doctor if symptoms if they persist or worsen.

Serious Side Effects

MedlinePlus says that the fentanyl can cause abnormalities in heart rhythm and chest pain due to decreased blood flow to your heart. In rare cases, you might also experience trouble breathing, weakness, tremors and shock. Rashes, hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and convulsions are other serious side effects of the fentanyl patch. Seek immediate medical attention for any of these side effects.

Other Side Effects

Drugs.com says that fentanyl can also cause confusion, hallucinations, extreme dizziness, fever and memory loss. Emergency medical care is required, as well, for these side effects.
