Tazo Awake tea is marketed by Starbucks and Tazo as an invigorating breakfast tea. The tea is composed of a variety of black tea blends, and is high in caffeine. According to Medline Plus, black tea and caffeine have been associated with improving energy levels, mental alertness and overall metabolism. Some studies have shown that teas, including black teas, may have some influence on weight loss.

Weight Loss

Weight loss occurs when there is an energy deficit and you burn more calories than you consume. This can be achieved either through lower calorie consumption or through increased physical activity. According to MayoClinic.com, 1 lb. of fat equals 3,500 calories. To lose 1 lb. of weight requires you to burn 3,500 more calories than you consume. Any weight loss plans including physical exercise and diet changes should be undertaken only with the supervision of a medical professional.

Black Tea

Black tea is made from the mature leaves of the camellia sinensis plant. The leaves are harvested after they have opened and matured, and are treated and oxidized to intensify the flavor of the leaves. According to Medline Plus, black tea is used with other ingredients as a weight loss aid. A new study in the journal Nutrition states that black tea has been demonstrated to aid in weight loss and lowering overall body fat. However, black tea as a weight loss supplement should be consumed in moderation because of its high caffeine content.


Black tea contains 2 to 4 percent caffeine, according to Medline Plus. Caffeine affects overall energy levels by providing a quick, sharp boost of energy. It can also help stimulate mental alertness, the metabolism and the central nervous system. According to Medline Plus, 2 to 4 cups of coffee per day are considered relatively safe for most people. MayoClinic.com states that this is between 300 and 400 mg of caffeine per day.


Heavy caffeine use, that over 500 to 600 mg per day can lead to a variety of complications, including insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, an increase heart rate and muscle tremors. According to Stash Tea, 1 cup of black tea, using one tea bag has approximately 40 mg of caffeine per serving, although, depending on how long the bag is left to steep for and the blend of teas, the caffeine content can range from 25 to 110 milligrams. Moderate consumption of black tea as a beverage and as a weight loss aid is strongly recommended due to its caffeine content.
