Interest in the numerous benefits of fish oils, such as cod liver oil, has grown exponentially in recent years. While cod liver oil is certainly not a miracle cure, a growing body of evidence suggests that it may provide some benefit to people with Asperger's syndrome and other autistic spectrum disorders. Consult your doctor before using any dietary supplements.

Significance

Cod liver oil, like other types of fish oil, contains high levels of two types of omega-3 fatty acids, also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids, or PUFAs. Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, and eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, are fatty acids that play an important role in a number of physical and mental processes. Your body cannot manufacture omega-3 fatty acids, so you must obtain them from dietary sources, like fish, or supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body, assist with normal growth and development and also play a crucial role in brain functioning. Research has found that children with autistic spectrum disorders like Asperger's, who tend to have unusually low levels of these fatty acids, may benefit from supplementation with fish oil.

The Facts

Asperger's syndrome is a developmental disorder classified as an autistic spectrum disorder; these are characterized by some level of impairment in communication and language skills and repetitive thoughts and/or behaviors. Children with Asperger's syndrome often do not experience the same degree of difficulty with language development as those with other types of autistic spectrum disorders. However, they do experience significant social impairment, often being unable to empathize or understand another person's feelings, having difficulty paying attention and having an obsessive fascination with specific people, objects or activities. The exact causes of Asperger's syndrome aren't yet known, but it is thought to occur partially due to genetic influences and structural changes in the brain. While a number of treatments may help, omega-3 fatty acids supplements are an alternative treatment that can offer some potential benefits, according to MayoClinic.com.

Clinical Evidence

A study published in the October 2004 issue of "Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids," the professional journal of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids, showed that patients with autism and Asperger's syndrome have significantly lower levels of essential fatty acids than normal control study participants. Supplementation with fish oils, like cod liver oil, may provide a significant benefit for children with Asperger's, although studies supporting this claim are still emerging as of the date of this publication. A report based on a parent survey, published in the September 2009 issue of the "Australian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine," states that cod liver oil is a "stand out product" for improving the behavior of children with Asperger's. More clinical studies are needed to fully evaluate the benefits of cod liver oil supplementation on patients with Asperger's syndrome.

Considerations

While cod liver oil may provide some benefit for improving symptoms of Asperger's syndrome, you should never rely on a dietary supplement to self-treat your or your child's condition. Fish oil supplements may cause undesirable side effects and can interact with certain medications. Inform your doctor if you choose to use cod liver oil or any other nutritional supplement, especially if you take any medication or have a medical condition.
