Parents, it is important to be your child's advocate. Some children might be able to tell you that they have a tummy ache, while young children might not. Stomachaches are one of the reason's parents take children to the emergency department or doctor's office. It can be something as simple as constipation, but an aching tummy also could be a symptom of another condition. Many problems could be remedied at home by drinking juice and water and eating crackers.

Tummy Ache Causes

A tender tummy could be the result of bowel issues, an infection, a muscle strain, migraine or even poisoning from spiders or chemicals. Your child also might have eaten too much food or might be having an allergic reaction. More serious causes include appendicitis. It is important to monitor your child's symptoms; seek medical attention if your child's tender tummy or other symptoms persist.

Food

It is important for children to eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are also high in fiber, which help children feel full and regulate bowel movements. At the onset of a stomachache, try having your child eat crackers, rice, bananas, toast and other bland foods. However, do not force your child to eat.

Beverages

Constipation is a common cause of a stomachache in children. Make sure your child drinks plenty of clear liquids and juice. Monitor what your child eats and drinks, as the onset of a tummy ache could also be the result of an allergic reaction to certain types of food. Some children are lactose intolerant and so have a hard time digesting milk and other dairy foods.

Considerations

Make sure your child is well-rested. Give your child a warm bath or place a warm water bottle on his tummy. If your child is in pain, offer acetaminophen; check for the correct dosage on the label or talk with your child's pediatrician. Do not give your child aspirin. Consult your child's pediatrician if problems persist.
