Fibroid cystic tumors comprise a noncancerous type of growth made of fibrous tissue, from which they are named. They form in the uterus wall, or womb, of pre-menopausal women. Research has revealed that estrogen is the driving force behind fibroids. However, they shrink and disappear at the onset of menopause when the production of estrogen ceases. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reports that common symptoms are experienced by 25 percent of women with fibroids. These symptoms include abnormal bleeding, decreased fertility and a swollen abdomen. There are surgical procedures available to treat fibroids but some women opt to try dietary changes as an alternative. Prior to beginning a new health regimen, please consult your physician.
High Glycemic Foods
Any food containing sugars and refined flour is considered high glycemic and should be avoided by women afflicted with fibroids. High glycemic foods cause elevated blood sugar levels, which directly influences how the body metabolizes estrogen. This chain reaction can lead to an abnormal increase of estrogen, which can speed fibroid growth. Dr. Chistiane Northrup suggests replacing high glycemic carbohydrates with low glycemic carbohydrate choices. Examples of low glycemic foods include vegetables and whole-grain breads and cereal.
High Sodium Foods
The usual high sodium culprits include prepackaged meals, luncheon meats, canned soup, chip and certain sauces and toppings. Replace each food high in sodium content with a lower-sodium variety. Make a habit of checking nutritional labels cautiously to avoid pitfalls. Preparing your own food is another option for controlling sodium intake.
Red Meat
Red meat contains fat that potentially supresses the metabolization of estrogen and can lead to heightened levels, hence causing more intense symptoms. The National Uterine Fibroids Foundation published a study that supports the connection between red meat and fibroid tumors. The study revealed that hormone-laden red meat can aggravate fibroids and lead to further growth. NutritionMD warns that consuming red meat every day can increase your chances of developing fibroids by 70 percent.
Non-Organic Dairy Products
Dairy products from non-organic sources contain artificial estrogen and growth hormones that originate from food eaten by livestock. Commercial farmers add synthetic hormones to the livestock feed to promote faster growth and weight gain. Women with fibroids who ingest these products risk suffering from fibroid growth and aggravated symptoms due to the high estrogen levels. Low-fat and organic alternatives are available and should replace high-fat, non-organic dairy products.
